These are the excellent free computer software programs that I use to protect my computer Canada from hackers, viruses and other threats to my computer and identity.

When you buy a new computer it will almost always have the Microsoft browser called Internet Explorer. This Microsoft product is the most widely used browser in the world making it a natural target browser for bad guys that want to create computer problems to the largest number of people possible. You do not have to use this vulnerable Explorer browser. You can do what I do and use a browser called Firefox. It does everything that Explorer does without the associated security risks. It is easy to download and install and it is free. N.B. Do not remove Explorer from your computer. If you need to get things like updates from Microsoft they force you to use their browser. Just an example of the kind of methods Bill Gates uses to build his obscene fortune.

Free Firewall

When you are connected to the Internet you need a program called a firewall. This protects you from hackers and other nasty things that want to attack your computer. I tried many different programs including the most well known that are pushed at you by computer manufacturers. Every one of them gave me grief of some kind. I came across a free firewall program called Zone Alarm and tried it out. I have used it now for several years and have never encountered a problem with it.

Free Virus Protection
I use a terrific free anti-virus program called AVG 8. Forget the rest this is simply the best. It is an open source program.

Productivity Software

Here is another open source program called Open Office that is not only as good as Microsoft office but fully compatible with it too. It will cost you nothing. I produced this document with one of the programs called Writer. I also use the Spreadsheet and Data Base programs from Open Office.

Computer Optimization

You can remove unused and temporary files from your system with a free program called CCleaner. The part I like best about this particular program is that it will clean up a part of your computer operating system called the registry. You do not want to mess around in there unless you are completely computer literate. Using this tool from time to time will allow Windows to run faster, more efficiently and give you more hard disk space. You might call this a computer tune up. Safe Passwords?

How do you safely store and remember all the passwords you use. There is a wonderful little tool that will allow you keep all of your passwords safely on your computer. You can access them anytime and never have to remember which password is for which site. This free computer tool is at Password Safe I have been using it for a couple of years and do not know how I would manage my password library without it.

Non Windows Operating System

There is a free open source operating system that will replace Windows and get rid of your concerns about computer attacks aimed at Microsoft Windows. The system is called Ubuntu I do not use it myself because it is not quite the neat little package for computer dummies like me that Microsoft Windows is. OK Bill Gates I will be fair. Yours is a very good product. Kudos to you.
