I have driven on many different Canadian Rockies vacation routes with each one providing its own breathtaking views. This page is devoted to what you can expect to encounter when driving. Most of the roads are two lanes that often expand to three lanes to allow faster vehicles passing opportunities. You will encounter sections built into the mountainside that have a vertical wall of rock towering skyward and a shear vertical drop on the other side. These sections wind and twist with some extremely sharp bends. Obey the posted speed signs and you will not get into trouble navigating them safely.

My personal favourite area is at Kicking Horse Pass on Route 1 east of Golden. The last time I drove through there was in early September 2007. At that time, an incredible viaduct or overpass, that will eliminate about half of the mountainside road, was almost complete. This road on stilts will, I am sure, provide a new breathtaking view of the pass.

Here are a few tips that will contribute to a safe and enjoyable Canadian Rockies vacation.

Do not run out of gas! When your gas tank reaches half full, you should top up at the first opportunity. Do not rely on signs advertising gas stations that are many clicks down the road. They have a nasty habit of not being open when you reach them.

Please be courteous to other drivers. If you want to drive at speeds below the limit, as I did, slow down and pull over to let other traffic pass. Rest stops, scenic view stops and many other places where the road widens, provide many opportunities to pull over. Be nice to the professional road warriors in their big rigs. They have a difficult job to do and really appreciate courteous drivers.

When driving from Edmonton or Calgary you will reach a place that gives you a choice of routes heading toward Vancouver. Route 5 toll road is the fastest and most direct way to travel. Part of the “Gold Rush Trail” is on Route 1 that follows the mighty Fraser River. I highly recommend this historical route for tourists. Many interesting communities established to take care of prospectors needs still exist. You will also discover a desert in the Canadian Rockies where only Gorse shrubs grow. There is a section where you can go rafting on the mighty Fraser river. If that is not your cup of tea you can watch and listen, from the roadside, to the screams of delight coming from the rafters as they traverse the boiling waters of the river.

There is an abundance of wild life in the Canadian Rockies. You are almost certain to encounter animals such as elk, mountain sheep, bears, wolves etc. Be alert, especially at night, when you see signs with animal warnings.
